TBT Trio of art plates

Throwback Thursday Craft – Other Types of Plates

It’s time again for a Throwback Thursday Craft to some “vintage” crafting days. On today’s docket are lesser known plates, similar to the fashion plates.

Several of you were probably familiar with the fashion plates post from last week. You can see that here.  And I just did a quick search on Amazon for those.  Wow!  There are several different kinds!!  I even found a set for making action figures and a set for the styles on Frozen!

So why do I even bring these up?  Well because they are an easy and creative idea for an upcoming birthday for a certain little someone.  Or maybe you’re looking for some indoor summer activities when the inevitable “Mom, I’m BORED” happens.

Moving on from fashion plates, there were additional ‘plate’ activities that filled many of my childhood hours. Many of these no longer appear to be in production but there are other styles of art plates available.

Let me introduce you to……

Pony Plates

As a horse-lover-but-never-owned-one I lived vicariously through these plates. Horses, ranches, cowgirls, competitions, and country scenery.  It was all in there.  I would create scenes, color them in, and then keep them in a folder.  Although you could hang them on a wall for the horse-loving girl.

Greeting Cards

Great Greetings Plates

This one came out for every birthday, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, get well, and thank you event. The plates had sayings like ‘happy birthday’, ‘thank you’, ‘get well’ and there were cute little scenes.

Here’s one I had given to my grandparents back in grade school.  They were keepers of cards and when they passed away, the cards were sorted out to the people who gave them.

Greeting card made from Great Greetings set

I can’t even begin to tell you how many cards my mom and dad and grandparents received from this set. I should really make up a few now and send them out just for the nostalgia.

I’m thinking they would make up a cute set of thank you cards for an upcoming graduate, or for a birthday party.  And you could either leave them uncolored and let the recipient color them, or maybe you color them in too.  I would suggest making them on regular paper and then attaching to cardstock for a more quality card. Consider using colorful cardstock as a backdrop.

Everything is digital for cardmaking, or leans towards the scrapbooking realm. So maybe instead of giving this one as a gift, you could peruse your craft store scrapbooking supplies and put together a gift of paper, decorative scissors, a couple of rubber stamps with an ink pad, and some stickers/stampers with all-occasion wording.  You could add all sorts of little embellishments too.

Good for a girl’s birthday party too.  Each girl makes a thank you card, and then the birthday girl sends them out after the party.  They wouldn’t even need to go to the same person who made them.  How fun for a little girl to have a card addressed to her that one of her friends made!

Character Plates

Character Plates

I’m not really sure what to call this one.  It was a series of head, body, and feet plates where you could create dogs, people, half dog half people, and other small animals and people.  These would make cute cards with blank interiors.  Maybe a good idea for a teacher to write a note to a student.

What “vintage” crafts did you do as a kid (that might no longer be around)?  Do you still have any of them?  Drop me a note in the comments!
