Simple Double Crochet Blanket
Today’s project is a simple double crochet blanket. It doesn’t get much more basic than that. Do you ever need one of those projects that just doesn’t require much focus? Maybe you’ve just finished a complicated and challenging pattern and you just need a break from it. Today’s pattern will do just that.
This blanket is great for a beginner crocheter, or even a veteran who wants a relaxing break. I don’t make this blanket often as I usually turn to the Lemon Peel stitch for my relaxing no-brainer. But today, I’m sharing two of the simple double crochet blankets I’ve made.
Oops!
Apparently I was in such a relaxed mood when I made this that I didn’t keep track of all the things — yarn color, how much yardage I used, or even the hook size. So I have bits and pieces and a few approximations.
I do know this blanket was made with a 4-weight Hobby Lobby yarn….I’m thinking Sugarwheel. And I’ve tried to find it online, but have not been able to. I let the colors flow, making it even easier.
What you’ll need (or my best guess of what I used for this simple double crochet blanket)
- Yarn – I’m guessing 4 skeins of Hobby Lobby Sugarwheel (100% acrylic, 355 yards/skein, 4-weight)
- Crochet Hook, or hook size recommended on the yarn – I’m guessing I used a US J or K hook, which would have been a bit larger than what the yarn called for
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Finished Dimensions: 58”L x 38”W
Instructions
There are a ton of patterns out there for a simple double crochet blanket, but I’ll share the basics of mine.
Chain 115.
Row 1: Single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook, and in each chain across. Turn. (114 single crochets)
*** Note: I like to start my first row as a row of single crochets to give it a good foundation row. And many times I’ll also end the blanket with a row of single crochets just for the symmetry. Neither are necessary or required. ***
Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), double crochet in the same stitch that the Ch2 came up from. Double crochet in each stitch across. Turn. (114 double crochets)
Rows 3- 99: Repeat Row 2.
Row 100: Ch 1, single crochet in the same stitch that the Ch1 came up from. Single crochet in each stitch across. Fasten off. Tuck ends.
I didn’t border the blankets as I didn’t feel it was necessary. But again, you could totally add a border.
Here’s a couple pics of another double crochet blanket I made from random yarn I had (again, no idea of brand or color or even how much). Based on the stripes, I’ll bet they were small skeins and I just worked a skein at a time until it ran out, and then switched to the next coloration. Just an idea of the possibilities.
Final Thoughts on the Simple Double Crochet Blanket
This blanket is also a good one to use scrap yarn. Do you have a bunch of partial skeins, why not crochet a scrap blanket? Don’t know if you have enough yarn? How about just using up the skeins you have and then letting the blanket sit until you finish another project and end up with more scrap yarn? You can then add more rows until you reach the length you like.
What is a simple pattern you like to go to for a relaxing crochet experience? Do I hear any granny squares out there? Drop me a note in the comments. I’d love to hear from you.
