New Project Spotlight: Crochet Waffle Stitch Blanket
Today’s New Project Spotlight is shining the light on the Waffle Stitch. There are plenty of written instructions and video tutorials out there for this stitch. I found this video pattern referenced on CrochetBeja’s website, with a link to Sirin’s Crochet video tutorial on YouTube and used the video. The waffle stitch is a bit of a yarn eater which is how it produces its cushy, almost spongy, thickness. What You’ll Need (or what I used) for the Waffle Stitch Crochet Blanket 4 skeins of Lion Brand Mandala Baby yarn (590 yards/skein; 100% acrylic; 3-weight) in the colorway HoneyDukes (I did do a border. I went borderless and therefore my…
New Project Spotlight: Cozy Cowl Crochet Poncho
In today’s New Project Spotlight we’re shining the light on the Cozy Cowl Crochet Poncho by Lion Brand. There were days when I absolutely loved working with 5- and 6-weight yarn. Projects like hats and cowls worked up so quickly and invoked a sense of warmth and comfort. Today’s project is one of those. With the cooler weather coming upon us (at least in my part of the world), the Cozy Cowl Crochet Poncho is, well, a cozy project to stitch up. The heat of autumn Is different from the heat of summer One ripens apples, the other turns them to cider — Jane Hirshfield I’ve made 2 of these…
New Project Spotlight: Crochet Sidewalk Shawl
In today’s New Project Spotlight we’re shining the light on the Crochet Sidewalk Shawl designed by Kimberly K. McAlindin. The link to the pattern (in the supply list below) is over at Yarnspirations. I think anyone who has crocheted for a while has acquired at least a few fave patterns. Today’s project is one of my faves. I’ve made this shawl multiple times, using different yarn weights and types. After finishing my first one, I wanted to just keep making more. It turned out gorgeous! What You’ll Need (or what I used) to make the Crochet Sidewalk Shawl 3 skeins Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable yarn (270 yards/skein; 100% acrylic; 4-weight)…
New Project Spotlight: Fall Boho Crochet Poncho
In today’s New Project Spotlight we’re shining the light on the Fall Boho Crochet Poncho by Anno Crochet Designs. There I was scrolling down the Facebook rabbit hole when I came upon a picture someone had posted of a gorgeous poncho. Does anyone else get that magical sensation in their body of excitement when something so pleasing is in front of you? Digging into the comments, I learned that the poncho was the Fall Boho Crochet Poncho by Annoo Crochet Designs. There was both a video link (which I did not use so cannot comment on) and a written pattern that was translated from the YouTube video by Michaela Greaves,…
New Project Spotlight: Secret Paths Crochet Shawl
Today’s New Project Spotlight shines the light on the Secret Paths Shawl designed by Johanna Lindahl over at Mijo Crochet. Have you ever eyed a project on Pinterest for what seems like forever, and finally one day you stumble over the actual pattern? Well, that’s the case for today’s project. And a happy stumble it was. I saw a version of the Secret Paths shawl done in Mandala yarn in the color way Warlock. This is the one that would consistently catch my attention every single time I saw it. So that’s what I also made it in. What You’ll Need (or what I used) for the Secret Paths Shawl…
New Project Spotlight: Royal Touch Crochet Blanket
In today’s New Project Spotlight series we’re shining the light on the Royal Touch crochet blanket designed by BebeBlanket on Ravelry. There is a link to a free instructional video, or you can purchase the written instructions. I used the free video link. Many of the projects I make, I would make again. And those are the ones I share here. Although I’m in the midst of trying lots of new patterns and techniques, this pattern is on the ‘will definitely make again’ list. It’s simple, yet stunning. What You’ll Need (or what I used for the Royal Touch crochet blanket) 4 skeins (355 yards/skein) of Hobby Lobby’s Sugarwheel yarn…
One of the Best Pieces of Advice I’ve Received
What is one piece of advice you’ve been given that has stuck with you? For me, it came from a prior boss of mine. Back when I was a young, ambitious, management protégé and wanted to conquer both the world and the company I worked at, my boss and I at the time got to talking about management styles – the good, the bad, the effective, the ineffective. He said to me, ‘Remember, you can learn just as much from a bad manager as you can from a good one.’ He went on to say that in many cases you learn more from a bad manager because you learn all…
New Project Spotlight: Crochet Posey Purse
In today’s New Project Spotlight we’re shining the light on the Crochet Posey Purse, designed by Edie Eckman for Yarnspirations. This purse is such a cutie! The pattern called for a solid yarn for the purse and a variegated yarn for the attached flower. I didn’t do the flower but I incorporated some stripes instead. The pattern called for 60 rows, plus handle flaps and finishing. For my summer-themed purse I decided to do some fun stripes in aqua, yellow (8 rows), red (6 rows), white (4 rows), and then back to white (4), red (6), yellow (8), and aqua. For a second one I made, I did stripes of…
New Project Spotlight: The Study of Texture crochet blanket
Today’s New Project Spotlight shines the light on The Study of Texture designed by Mikey from The Crochet Crowd. Mikey does an excellent job of providing both written instruction, graphs, as well as video tutorials so he covers several, if not all, of the learning options. I usually use the written instructions and only if I get unusually stuck somewhere do I head for his videos. Crocheting blankets that have a variety of stitches has been of interest to me lately. One, because I like learning new stitches, or even just brushing up on stitches I haven’t used in a while, but two, it keeps me interested in the blanket.…
What sports can teach us about crochet {or any craft}
So many areas of our lives are impacted by the lessons we learn along the way. Today we’re going to talk about what sports can teach us about crochet (or any craft). I used to play sports as a kid. I started with just horsing around with my brothers in our front yard with wiffle ball, kickball, and a make-shift basketball court. I graduated into girls softball in my grade school years, to girls basketball in my junior high years, and to a season-to-season cycle of cross country, basketball, and track during my high school years. Some of my happiest memories are being on a basketball court or cross country…
