New Project Spotlight: Glorious Granny Crochet Blanket

Today’s New Project Spotlight shines the light on a colorful and fun way to use Lion Brand Mandala or Cupcake yarn — or any other self-striping yarn. It is the Glorious Granny using the pattern by Fiber Spider.

This is a pattern I watched on YouTube and then jotted down the instructions as he went so I’d have a “written” pattern I could refer to whenever I worked on it.

I watched it a second time and made sure that my written instructions were accurate. Once you get past the first few rounds, it works up pretty repetitively.

I don’t recall the video covering the quantity of yarn or the finished dimensions. It did mention using Lion Brand Ice Cream yarn. And I must say the video is very well worth watching. He takes his time, explains everything well, and is quite good at it.

What You’ll Need (or what I used)

4 square glorious granny

Finished Dimensions: 42″x42″.

I worked 24 rounds of the pattern and then 1 round of single crochet before fastening off. I made 4 of these squares. Each of the squares took almost 1 skein of yarn. I intentionally tried to start with a different color for each square so I would have a different series of colors play out with each square. I also stopped at the 24-round marker so I had a small-ish ball of yarn leftover to join and border the blanket.

For those of you wondering what the back looks like.  It resembles a granny square worked in the round.  So while it doesn’t match the front, it looks equally pleasing — though the front definitely has the texture.

Joining Glorious Granny Squares

After the 4 squares were complete (and ends tucked), I joined them using a slip stitch, grabbing the inner loop from each square. Since each of the squares already had a round of single crochets, I worked 2 border rows of a crisscross double crochet, and finished off with 1 round of single crochets. Looking at the blanket now, I could see using a crab stitch in place of the last single crochet round.

Joining

You could make any number of squares in any number of sizes and I’m guessing that’s why the video didn’t cover yarn quantity. You could make one large square, or a series of squares for a certain bed size. There really are a lot of possibilities with this one.

Final Thoughts on the Glorious Granny crochet blanket

If you would like an easy blanket (maybe advanced beginner) with a textural punch, this is your blanket. I could see working it up in any number of Mandala yarns and different sized squares.  Thank you to Fiber Spider for sharing the Glorious Granny crochet pattern.
