New Project Spotlight: Crochet Sidewalk Shawl
In today’s New Project Spotlight we’re shining the light on the Crochet Sidewalk Shawl designed by Kimberly K. McAlindin. The link to the pattern (in the supply list below) is over at Yarnspirations.
I think anyone who has crocheted for a while has acquired at least a few fave patterns. Today’s project is one of my faves.
I’ve made this shawl multiple times, using different yarn weights and types. After finishing my first one, I wanted to just keep making more. It turned out gorgeous!
What You’ll Need (or what I used) to make the Crochet Sidewalk Shawl
- 3 skeins Red Heart Boutique Unforgettable yarn (270 yards/skein; 100% acrylic; 4-weight) in the colorway Tealberry. This is a thinner 4-weight yarn. I did NOT do the fringe, so I used just over 2 skeins….like literally I used the 3rd skein for less than 1 row.
- US-H hook
- Scissors
- Yarn Needle

Yarn Opinions
The pattern called for using 6 balls of yarn by Stitch Nation by Debbie Stoller Bamboo Ewe (177 yards each) which appears to be discontinued. Part of this yardage is for fringe, which I did not make. The yarn appears to have been a 4-weight yarn, but I have some in my yarn collection and it seems to be a lighter 4-weight.
Thinner Yarns seem to work better
This is definitely a pattern for a lighter weight yarn. Yarns of a lightweight 4-weight, a 3-weight, heck I’ve even contemplated using a sock yarn.
There was a time when I was really into the thicker weight yarns because projects worked up so quickly. I made this shawl from a couple thicker yarns but the shawl turned out too thick to wear comfortably…..at least the way I like to wear them —- wrapped around my neck and tied in the front.
Although as I sit here typing, I wonder about tying it like another scarf I recently made. And instead of wrapping the ends back around to the front, maybe I just try tying it in the back (a style I’ve never preferred on myself).
Because of this, I think I have these 2 scarves still stashed away waiting for the ends to be tucked. LOL! I might just dig those out with a renewed fervor.
Thicker yarns I’ve used for this pattern
For those of you interested in the thicker yarn variety for this shawl, here’s the other yarns I’ve used:
- Hobby Lobby’s Yarn Bee Aspyn – 4 skeins – 141 yards/skein, H hook, didn’t finish the last 3 rows
- Lion Brand Landscapes – 4 skeins – 147 yards/skein, H hook, didn’t finish the last 4 rows
I don’t remember if I didn’t finish those last few rows because I ran out of yarn, or because the shawl was sufficiently big enough. I’m guessing it’s because I ran out of yarn but I least wanted to throw that out there.
I’ve started this shawl once in a mohair style yarn, wasn’t paying close enough attention to my stitches, and somehow got off course. For those of you who have worked with mohair or similar fibers, you know the madness of frogging. All of those extra hairs that get tied up and make it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to rip out. I never finished that one.
Final Thoughts on the Crochet Sidewalk Shawl
I love this shawl, especially the one I have in Tealberry. It is definitely a pattern that tethers me to instructions. I do have to be a little more focused.
