New Project Spotlight: Cozy Cowl Crochet Poncho

In today’s New Project Spotlight we’re shining the light on the Cozy Cowl Crochet Poncho by Lion Brand.

There were days when I absolutely loved working with 5- and 6-weight yarn. Projects like hats and cowls worked up so quickly and invoked a sense of warmth and comfort. Today’s project is one of those. With the cooler weather coming upon us (at least in my part of the world), the Cozy Cowl Crochet Poncho is, well, a cozy project to stitch up.

Is different from the heat of summer

I’ve made 2 of these and I like the cowl-neck design because my neck tends to get chilly.  I have a pixie style haircut. The poncho is oh-so-soft because it is worked up in Lion Brand Homespun Thick and Quick yarn, a 6-weight yarn.

The pattern is very simple and once you figure out the layout, it’s amazingly easy!

What You’ll Need (or what I used) for the Cozy Cowl Crochet Poncho

  • 3 skeins of Lion Brand Thick and Quick yarn (160 yards/skein, 100% acrylic, 6-weight). I made one in the Coral Stripes colorway, and a second one in the Greystone Stripes colorway
  • US-P (10mm) hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle

If you can do the half double crochet, a single crochet, and a chain, you’re well on your way to manifesting this poncho.

The pattern has you make ONE rectangle and then you tack on a cowl neck. That’s it! Literally, that is it. While you could probably use other weights of yarn, it would definitely require more yarn and additional stitches…like any project where a lesser weight is used.

The good news is the pattern gives you the dimensions that it should measure and so that would be your holy grail. While I’ve made two of them using the Thick and Quick yarn, I don’t always like how the yarn “sheds” onto darker clothing. I would wear it with a shirt underneath, but my shirt ends up being covered in yarn hair.

Eventually I’d like to try this pattern with a less hairy yarn….think Lion Brand Mandala in the Centaur colorway, or even a lighter spring-y/summery design in LB Mandala Baby colorway Atlantis, or a we’re-just-getting-into-fall in the LB Cupcake colorway Apple Picking. I think the self-striping yarns would work up in a very interesting way. A Caron Big Cake would increase the yarn size, and there’s always the option to double up yarn — pull from two skeins at the same time.  So many ideas!!

Final Thoughts on the Cozy Cowl Crochet Poncho

Actually, as I sit here typing and staring at my self-striping yarn collection, I believe I just found the project for my LB Mandala Tweed in the colorway White Elephant. I started a project in it, but so much of the stitching is lost in the coloration variation. But THIS pattern? This pattern might just be the perfect pattern for it.

What is your favorite poncho pattern and where can we find it? Thank you to Lion Brand Yarn for sharing the Cozy Cowl Crochet Poncho pattern.
