New Project Spotlight: Corner to Corner (C2C) Crochet Blanket

In today’s New Project Spotlight series we’re shining the light on the corner to corner (C2C) crochet blanket.

The corner to corner (C2C) stitch is an interesting break from the straight up and down construction of typical blanket patterns. While this stitch can be used on more than just blanket patterns, that is where we used it. It works on the diagonal. You start at one corner and you progress on the diagonal until you reach a point where you then begin to decrease to the opposite corner.

The first time I tried this stitch I had a little bit of the ‘all thumbs’ symptom. But once I understood the logistics and got through a few rows, it is a very easy stitch. You’re essentially building blocks, similar to a pixelated picture or the old days of computer block pictures.

What you’ll need (or what I used for the Corner to Corner (C2C) crochet blanket)

C2C blanket
  • 7.5 skeins of Lion Brand Homespun (185 yards/skein; 5-weight; 98% acrylic/2% other fiber) in the colorway Stonewashed Stripes
  • US-K Hook
  • Yarn Needle (for tucking ends)
  • Scissors
  • C2C pattern. I used this one over at The Crochet Crowd.

Finished dimensions: 48” x 48”

This blanket can be made into a square or a rectangle depending on the number of rows you make. For a rectangle, you simply stop increasing on one side, while continuing to increase on the other side. This is explained better in the pattern. I made a square because I knew I had a set number of skeins and I figured when I used about half of them, I’d go ahead and start decreasing. I made 53 rows and then began decreasing.

One word of caution. You may look around on Pinterest and find cute C2C patterns with pictures imbedded within the stitching, like a pixelated picture.  This is one of the most creative uses of this stitch. My word of caution is to watch your tension! When changing colors and picking up new ones, be sure to maintain loose tension, otherwise your finished square will end up looking wonky…personal experience.

Final Thoughts on the Corner to Corner (C2C) crochet blanket

Once you get the hang of C2C you can design your own pixelated designs. You could use graph paper or a spreadsheet software (like MicroSoft Excel) to build it.

What do you think of the C2C stitch?  Is it something you’ll try?  Or maybe you’ve already tried it….how’d you like it? Drop me a note in the comments!

Thank you to Mikey at The Crochet Crowd for sharing the instructional video for making a Corner to Corner (C2C) crochet pattern!
