Lemon Peel and Star Stitch Crochet Blanket
In today’s New Project Spotlight we are shining the light on a stitch combo using the lemon peel stitch (my favorite!) and the star stitch. I learned how to use the star stitch by using the tutorial over at Drops Designs (link to the tutorial is in the supply list below). Any of you have been with me know the lemon peel stitch is my absolute favorite stitch so I’ve included a link in the supply list for that one too.
Mixing up stitches in a blanket can be a tricky thing, especially when a stitch like the star stitch uses a unique series of stitch placements. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s dig into what you’ll need.
What you’ll need (or what I used for the Lemon Peel and Star Stitch Crochet Blanket)
- Red Heart Super Saver yarn – approximately 5 skeins in the colorway Pink Camo (244yds/skein, 4-weight, 100% acrylic)
- I Love This Yarn – 1 skein in the colorway Rosy Cheek (355yds/skein, 4-weight, 100% acrylic)
- US-K hook
- Yarn Needle
- Scissors
- Lemon Peel stitch pattern
- Star stitch pattern
Finished Dimensions: 43”L x 44.5”W
General Instructions
Using the Camo yarn, I started off by chaining 126.
Row 1: From there I turn and SC in the 2nd chain from the hook. SC in each stitch to the end. (I like using this as my base row.)
Row 2-17: starting with the Lemon Peel stitch, chain 2, double crochet in the first stitch (which I refer to as the stitch that the chain 2 is coming out of). Single crochet in the next stitch. Double crochet in the next stitch. Single corchet in the next stitch. Alternated the double crochet and single crochet to the end of the row.
(Whatever stitch you end with, you begin the next row with the other one. So if you end with a single crochet, you start the next row with a ch 2 and a double crochet. And if you end with a double crochet, you start the next row with a ch 1 and a single crochet.
Work the rows in Lemon Peel stitch until the skein of yarn runs out, or you come to the end of a row. For me, that was almost 17 rows.
Row 18: Using the Rosy Cheek yarn, we will begin using the Star Stitch. The Star Stitch is 2-row repeat. But before we do that, I used the Rosy Cheek yarn and did a row of single crochets to create a straighter row. So for this row, Chain 1, single crochet in the same stitch, single crochet in each stitch to the end.
Row 19: Using the Rosy Cheek yarn, Chain 3, and work the Star Stitch across. Work 1 double crochet in the last stitch.
Row 20-24: Continue working the Star Stitch, this time using the 2nd of the 2-row repeat.
Repeat this 2-row repeat for a total of 6 rows.
I also noticed I needed to add a few stitches in order to prevent the sides from pulling in on the rows where I worked the Star Stitch. But remember, we’ll need to decrease these when we go back to the Lemon Peel.
Switch back to the Camo yarn and work the Lemon Peel stitch randomly decreasing by the same number of stitches in which you increased. I don’t think I had more than a few stitch difference. Continue the Lemon Peel stitch until the skein of Camo yarn is finished. Then do the row of single crochets and go back to the Rosy Cheek yarn and the star stitch. Continue alternating for a total of 9 stripes.
I did not add a border, although you definitely could. And it might help to further hide the wonky-ness of the stitch transitions.
Final Thoughts on the Lemon Peel and Star Stitch crochet blanket
This was not one of my better projects. While I liked the way the two stitches worked together, I didn’t like the wonkiness it created on the edges. Thank you to Garn Studio’s Drops Design for sharing the Star Stitch crochet pattern.
