How to Crochet a Poncho for 18″ dolls
In today’s project we are going to crochet a poncho for an 18″ doll. This poncho can also be converted into a cowl by simply folding it in half when you place it on the doll.
How many 40+ years olds do you know that own an American Girl doll, or really any other 18” doll? Don’t know any? Well, now you do!
A few years ago and I peeked into the world of doll clothes and discovered a whole world out there that I knew nothing about.
After climbing down rabbit hole after rabbit hole of doll clothes and ideas on Pinterest, I decided to try my hand at making up my own patterns.
This crochet shoulder shawl was a result of those experiments. And there are soooo many variations you can add to it — different trims, different yarn textures, etc.
What you’ll need for this crochet poncho for 18″ dolls
- 4-weight yarn (you can use any yarn weight, with the corresponding hook size, but because this is already such a tiny garment, the thinner yarns seem to work best, at least in my opinion)
- US-K hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Finished dimensions: Because you’re working in the round, when you set your poncho down flat (which means they are folded on the sides) the dimensions are 7”wide x 3.5” tall.
Instructions
Foundation Round: Chain 41. Slip stitch to beginning chain, being careful not to twist the chain row.
Round 1: DC in the first chain, SC in the next chain. Continue repeating DC/SC around. Slip stitch to beginning DC.
Rounds 2-9: Repeat Round 1.
Fasten off. Tuck ends.
Additional Notes
For the boa style yarn, I used two yarns at once — one boa, and one 4 weight yarn. The 3 or 4 weight yarn gives the boa yarn some structure and you don’t even notice it. For this one I also used a K-Hook.
In addition to different yarns you could make this as tall or skinny as you’d like simply by adjusting the number of rows. Keep adding rows if you’d like it taller, and remove rows if you’d like it skinnier.
You could also trim it in a fur yarn, or with a contrasting yarn, or use different crochet stitches to add a cross-stitched design afterwards. The options are just endless!
