Easy Patriotic Wreath for your Front Door (DIY)

Well hello there! Today we’re going to make an easy patriotic wreath for your front door to help you kick off summer.

There’s nothing like getting out some of the summer décor — florals, beach themes, bright colors. And when I think of summer I conjure up small-town bbqs and town square events, which inevitably bring with it the vision of our U.S. flag — flags decorating sidewalks, front porches, and front doors. I’m thinking holidays such as Memorial Day and July 4th. So today we’re going to kick off your summer and make a patriotic wreath for your front door.

Supplies

  • 18” unfinished grapevine wreath
  • Spray Paint – I used Rust-oleum for plastics, color Satin Aqua
  • Flag – 3’x5’ lightweight nylon; mine had a previous life as an outdoor flag
  • Bread ties
  • Flower with pinch clip

Instructions for an Easy Patriotic Wreath

Paint the wreath

Using a drop cloth, spray paint one side of your grapevine wreath.  Allow that to dry.  And then flip it over and spray paint the other side.  Allow that to dry.

Flag Placement

Once dried, lay the flag over the top of the wreath.  Gather up the left side of the flag and tuck it into the left backside of the wreath.  I literally tucked it into the gaps of the wreath. You could glue it too, but be sure you go through the rest of these steps before you do that.

Wrap the flag around the outside of the wreath, across the front of the wreath, and gather it up at about the two o’clock position.

This is where I used a bread tie to both gather it and tack it to the wreath.  I slid the bread tie around the gathered up flag, twisted it once or twice, and then used the bread tie tails to twist around a few pieces of the wreath. You could use multiple bread ties, one to gather up the flag, and another slipped through the first one to attach to the wreath.  You could also just glue the flag in place.

Once clipped in place, wrap the remainder of the flag around the outside of the wreath at the 2 o’clock position, and then feed it around the back of the wreath and back through the middle so the tail hangs downward in front of the wreath.

Reposition as needed and then once you have it exactly the way you want it, you can glue it in place. I’ve never glued mine and have used it several years.

Attach the flower

Pin, clip, or glue any embellishments, particularly over the bread tie.  I used a flower that has a pinch clip on the back and clipped it right over top the bread tie.

Closing Thoughts on your easy patriotic wreath

As you hang this easy patriotic flag on your front door, walkway, or garden gate, send up a thank you to all of the men and women who have honored the call to defend it.

“May we never forget freedom isn’t free.” – unknown.
