Throwback Thursday Craft – Fashion Plates
It’s that time again, for Throwback Thursday, crafting style. And again, we’re going back to the 80s to another of my first crafts.
Show of hands, who had their very own Fashion Plates set, or at least access to one? You too? Weren’t we all going to be fashion designers with our avant-garde (is that even spelled right?) fashion? LOL.
The charcoal holder. The plates of models. The plates of designs to embellish the outfits. The different tops — halters, billowy blouses, tee shirts. The variety of bottoms — skirts, pants, shorts. The “looks” — athletic, romantic, trendy. The different hair styles — pixie cut, long and luscious, a cute bob.
The myriad ways to color the designed outfits and models.
The possibilities were almost endless.
More designer goodness
And THEN, who also had the add-on kit? Yes, yes. {nodding head} Additional plates of models, tops, bottoms, and even more designer goodness. How could it have gotten any better?!
I’m sure we have daughters and nieces who haven’t had the Fashion Plate experience…..yet, but I know you, as the mom or aunt or close family friend will ensure that they get this experience.
I know, there are probably cool digital versions now but what happened to the tactile experience? How about gluing on additional embellishments, or cutting out fabrics to create a 3D outfit? I’m seeing a girl’s birthday party activity.
Modern ideas on Fashion Plates
How cute would it be to use the designs to make framed prints in a girl’s bedroom? Or even framed prints in a craft or sewing room? You could make a series of prints with a witty saying and frame it for the powder room.
How about on greeting cards? What a cute, feminine card for a friend’s birthday, embellished up, with a witty (or not so witty) saying! You could go simple, or very ornate. How about making a card for that one friend that you actually did Fashion Plates with as a kid? Tell me she wouldn’t get a kick out of that!
What was one of your first crafts? Drop me a note in the comments. Better yet, go dig it out and share it with your son, daughter, niece, nephew, or any other bright-eyed human being. Or add it to a birthday or Christmas list for that creative kid on your list!
